Ebony. Just to be posh. It is just beautiful stuff to work with too, dense as hell. You want it it to deaden sound, right?

Maple is used with much success by some manufacturers of “chopping block” style turntable supports, and is a nice tight grained wood. Also used in instrument construction, rock maple is often used for bass necks, because it doesn’t ring. And it’s not too rare so it should be affordable and easy to find. And it finishes nicely, a simple oil finish is all that’s needed. If fancy is what you want, get some birds eye maple!

This kind of question crops up quite frequently and when it does there are always plenty of answers stating that certain types of wood are used for certain bits of musical instruments - but so what? What has the neck of a bass guitar or the soundboard of a piano got to do with it?
For example, the neck of a bass guitar is under a lot of tension and has to be able to withstand it, so wood is chosen accordingly. Even then, the neck has to be reinforced with a truss rod. The neck of a classical guitar is under a lot less tension and is a lot shorter, wider and thicker, so it doesn't have to be as strong and lighter wood is usually chosen.
Ebony is used for fingerboards because it is very hard-wearing, not for any particular sonic properties.
Anyway, the point is that musical instruments are not feet for hi-fi components so choosing the same wood really doesn't make any sense.

Just use whatever wood you like the look of, that turns well and you have available.

Lacquered spruce is what Altmann uses.

I'm not sure how suitable that would be for turning. Maybe the OP has sufficient experience with a lathe to know.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
