    I've read on a few occasions that birch ply is really good for midrange sounds but that was discussing loudspeakers.

    I have several large chunks of Tufnol, just waiting for projects. Might turn up some equipment feet or even machine a headshell for a tonearm project.

    Perhaps a knuckle rap test is a good idea? Find some samples and give them a knock, if it sounds dead, no resonant frequency, that may be your choice?
