“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".
“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”
"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”
“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
***SMILE, BE HAPPY***
We were in the same position, until we completely redesigned the kitchen and fitted all new appliances.
The 50-year old electric cooker we had (of which only 3 of the 4 rings worked), the seal on the oven door on which had long gone, so the door had to be propped up and kept closed with something heavy, for the oven to work, was of a non-standard size, and so one simply couldn't just replace the cooker with a modern one - a new kitchen was needed to facilitate the installation of a new cooker!
So we ripped the whole lot out and started again, as it was badly needing done, and because of the above and the cost involved in doing it right, the way we wanted, something we'd put off doing for years. The job was problematic and took a long time to get right, plus the mess and upheaval was HORRENDOUS, but sitting back now in our beautiful new kitchen (which you've seen), and the pleasure and sense of satisfaction that gives us everyday, has made it all worthwhile!!
Sometimes, you've just got to bite the bullet and get stuff done, which BADLY needs doing, and take two steps back before taking four steps forward, as otherwise you can end up just living in the land that time forgot, in an environment that you know is shabby and far from pleasant, and gets you down just looking at it. Even if you don't realise it, that's not good for your head....
At least you've got Happy to consider now, so I'm sure she'll 'refocus your priorities' and drag you kicking and screaming into the 21st century!
She made a good point when she was here with you recently, in that you can't take your money with you, so enjoy it while you still can, and spend some, as life's too short... Being stubbornly anachronistic, or a tight-wad, just for the sake of it, really isn't cool.
I guarantee if you show her this post, she'll nod vehemently in agreement!
Marco.
P.S Oh, and sell that old rust-bucket you've got, posing as a car, and get yourself a nice Jaguar. It'll be much more 'you', and plus you deserve it

I'm joe.
Allow me to derail this thread too!
I just woke from the strangest dream! And thought I’d better write it down before I forget it.
A small meteor struck the Earth up in Northern Canada, near the North Pole. So, several scientists went up to take a look at it. It sat in a crater and was still whole, about 3 meters long, and 2 wide. Whatever it was made of was extremely heavy! And it was sinking into the earth. These scientists, two from Canada, two from America, and two from Russia, closely inspected it before it sunk out of sight. And later realized it had given them super powers! Such as telepathy, mind reading, seeing into the future, etc.
That’s when I woke up. Too bad really, I’d like to have seen how it ends? Maybe tomorrow night?

Not a great strategy ....
A while ago we redid our kitchen and replaced the ageing gas cooker (also about 40 years old then) The previous owner was not short of cash and the cooker was (in its time) clearly of good manufacture.
The gas fitter who came to fit the new one showed us the state of the supply hose at the back of the old one - perished and cracking and, as he put it, 'a ticking time bomb'
Gas is the one thing in the house I absolutely won't take risks with; two houses in our neighbourhood have had gas explosions due to old equipment in the last ten years.
I've never been keen on gas either. If it was a new product there is no way it would get past health and safety. Too much scope for user error and big consequences to those errors.
Current Lash Up:
