I have a similar issue only not so pronounced. I guess you have experimented with moving the speakers forwards and backwards and the listening seat likewise? In along room with speakers firing down the length they reckon you should have the speakers 1 third down and the seat 1 third down the room, or if that doesn't work try 1 fifth. If you didn't already.

I'm having trouble getting away from this "The weird thing is if I turn the balance full to either speaker there is loads of bass - but turn it back and it's like they cancel each other out."

My speakers firing down a longish narrow room ( wooden floors ) does base very nicely certainly better than my old square listening
room with carpet. Good luck Adrianne with the problem.
I guess perfectly square rooms may pose some problems but the rooms are was referring to were "squarish"!

Having done a lot of reading on room acoustics this could be explained by reflections causing the cancellation. In theory.

Today is a rare day off so I'm going to continue experimenting

Just hanging a wall rug could be all you need.

Damping of rooms is a strange thing. You never know what may work.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Yeah, the third/ third route works well in my narrow room.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

That line I quoted sounds like a textbook example of a phase problem somewhere.
I just don't trust coincidence is all.

Absorbing high frequencies is quite easy. Absorbing bass frequencies is something else entirely. A duvet or an inch of rockwool isn't going to do anything for frequencies below 100Hz.
