Anything with Bluetooth will do - doesn't have to be a mobile phone.

This is a comment on Wigwam by a respected founder member.
I offer no opinion but I would like yours.......
There is nothing in a top-notch dac (made in Europe) that could make it cost more than £1000, the nice case and the expensive power supply included. What is the "remaining" £2000 for ? Seller's profit ?

A shame that "respected members" spread such nonsense. That's my opinion.

No problem Alex. I posted the comment so I could get lots of opinion about what constitued 'good'. Personally I have never heard a dac in that price range but I guess a fair percentage of the cost is in the packaging!

I would enjoy Stan's view on this topic.

A good DAC can cost less than £200, as the TC-7510 and 7520 have shown.
An excellent DAC can cost less than £400. Caiman, DacMagic are typical candidates.
An outstanding DAC can cost less than £1000. It's just a shame that there are no obvious contenders in that price region.

Indeed - "good" to look at, "good" to use, sounds "good" - Stan, stick a Caiman in a fancy box, add a line in or 2, and remote control, £3,495 - job done!

Remember fellas, at top end markups, your £3000 DAC would cost probably £5 - 600 to make and at least half of this would be the casework...

I'm intrigued about the valve DAC. I'm still blowing hot and cold about getting my CD player fixed, as it's too heavy to reliably send anywhere and paying the likes of Audiocom to mod it may not be worthwhile if the laser packs up shortly after...

I would prefer to use a different name to Caiman if I was to undertake such a task. If there are any suggestions, we can start a new topic on that maybe.
