Default WTD - SME tonearm for Garrard 401

    Hi

I have a Garrard 401 with an SME 3009 series 2 non-improved and am looking for an upgrade

I missed an SME IV by 15 minutes on Friday so looking for something similar - maybe a IV or 309 or M2-9(R).

It needs to be 9 inch as my plinth is not big enough for a 12 inch arm

So does anyone have anything they are looking to move on?

    Many thanks

    Steve

I've got an Alphason I'd take over an SME any day of the week. Best thing is it comes with a LINN to SME adapter so you don't have to drill the plinth. Its the correct mounting distance. Drop in and play. £550 + postage.

    Cheers

Works lovely with a 401. It's a combination I had for quite a while, the 774 ousted the Ittok I'd been using.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

I have an SME Mk V I may sell but price would be £1200.

Its the black version with gold lettering and is complete with box and accesories. It is currently on a Michell deck which rarely gets used.

SME 5 works well on a Garrard 401, just get rid of the horrible rubbish VDH arm cable for something better.

Thanks - any recommendations on a better cable if I go this way?

My choices were used Graham IC70s but those aren't that common on the used market. I haven't done much comparing in recent times so can't suggest a current option sorry.

Anything is better than the VDH IMO. VAN DAMME do a silver copper hybrid which is very good.

I have the original VDH cable but use an Audio Origami cable made for the Mk V and will supply both if sold.

Personally I quite liked the VDH cable and replaced it as some online comments suggested it. In hind sight I wonder if some views are based on hearsay rather than ownership.

Anyway cables are pretty much a personal thing but at least there's a respected alternative included.
