It is for some people. I don't get it either but then the attraction of collecting anything just for the sake of it has always eluded me.

It could be argued that buying rare vinyl is simply an investment. Unless there is a downswing in the popularity of vinyl, which seems unlikely, the record is going to appreciate in value at a higher rate than inflation.

I mostly use Spotify, I have around 20 vinyl lp's that I regularly play, the rest and there are not that many don't get played. Playing a cd is a rare thing, usually when the Internet connection is buggering about.

There are no expletives adequate to express how much I hate that sort of nonsense.

People collect all sorts of things, and sometimes its as an investment, and often because they are interested in subject. The fact that they have now become more valuable isnt a crime. folk do it when they buy a house after all

I think you are overly optimistic in your assessment of the investment value of vinyl. I was at University in London in the late 70's and my daily journey would take me through Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road. Although there were some bargains to be had in the vaults of Simon's Records (long defunct) I seem to recall the typical price of an album as being around £5 then. Adjusting this simply by the RPI would equate to about £15 today which is what I have seen many new and re-issued albums going for in Sainsbury's and elsewhere. However, if we look in terms of income equivalence, that same £5 is equivalent to more than £25 in earnings in 1981. I will resist the temptation as an economist to pontificate on the different methods for calculating adjusted prices and values, but those who want to delve further should go to this site: www.measuringworth.com

My extensive vinyl collection was in storage for the best part of twenty years and as such is in pristine condition. However, I doubt that few people would be willing to pay £15 let alone £25 quid for any but a few of my rare vinyl pressings. Bottom line: buy vinyl as a consumption purchase not an investment!

Geoff you might be surprised at what people will pay if you have the right issue and in good condition.

In any case if I bought the record new in 1987 for £5 and can sell it now for £15 adjusting for inflation I'm roughly selling it now for what I paid for it then. That's not bad.

I just collect the vinyl I like to play... Not for the sake of it.

I do know plenty who collect, one guy I know has over 10,000 records. He has always collected them but since the resurrection of vinyl he now collects as an investment. Some would say that's a shaky boat but others think it's a very good investment.

He has numerous copies of the beatles white album with very low numbers and has everything I have.

His hifi however isn't something to write home about.

I love my vinyl collection because I like to play them although some are still sealed.

The only reason I've ever bought a record is because I thought I might like listening to it. Of course that hasn't always worked out.

    Martin,

I mentioned the RPI first because that is what most people are familiar with but in truth it is not the best deflator for this purpose. I would argue that purchasing power is a better deflator, which would mean that the record that cost £5 back then would have represented a "sacrifice" of £25 in terms of earnings in today's money.

I am hoping to start a new long term overseas contract in the new year and would be happy to sell my vinyl at £15 a pop before it all goes back into long term storage. What, no offers?

On a related note, a new Rover Metro cost around £8k 25 years ago. Today, one can buy a Hyundai i10 for not much more in nominal terms. Of course, there is no comparison in terms of quality, the i10 is a better built and better performing car by far. Amazing productivity gains over this period!

    Geoff
