Lol... I wouldn't generalise like that though, as not all 'women' are the same. If you're unfortunate to have one like that, however, then simply tell her to toughen up!

You have some nice things to say Marco and I agree that we have to make the best of it and enjoy whats there if possible.

I do get a bit of seasonal disorder and it was the coming home from work when its cold and the traffic jams seem to be worse. The rainy cold dark evenings as full on winter approaches. It has a depressing feeling that the day is over at 5pm especially if Ive been working. Everybody seems to cope less but thats because we are warm blooded and winter is really our enemy

I dont like it dark In the late afternoon or early evenings and we are too far into the Northern hemisphere for my liking.

Yes its nice to cosy up indoors but the car has to be prepared and warmed up.

Im with the animals that hibernate and its all too easy to forget that winter is natures regulator.

There was a programme on about how we handle temperature and if we sit still in a room at 12 degrees C it starts to play havoc with our functions. You wouldnt think 12 degrees was very low.

I agree that some get over reliant on full blast heating when there is no need for it. I know Winter is the time when our immune systems are most vunerable and moving from stuffy to cold environments doesnt help.

There is an art to managing heating effectively and I try not to switch it all on until late October or even November. I have good fan heaters for quick emergency blasts. I might try that Dyson jet air thing

    All the best

At 12c after a short while your BP rises ( to dangerous levels for many )...Blood gets thicker and your at risk of a stroke or heart attack when older when sitting it a cold envioron for too long.. 12c is way too cold.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Sorry to hear about your SAD. Fortunately, I don't suffer from that, and also as I'm semi-retired and work from home, I can enjoy whatever daylight there is, and of course sitting in traffic jams, or warming cars up for the 'daily commute', is a non-issue!

I totally understand where you're coming from, but it doesn't bother me, as I quite like the dark.

I find darkness quite atmospheric, and in the wintertime when it starts getting that way around 4pm, that's the signal for me to light the log fire (if it isn't already lit), draw the curtains, light some candles and 'cosy up' for the evening, and get the house nice and warm for my wife coming home from work, when we will then enjoy a lovely meal together and perhaps a bottle of wine - so it's a time of day, even when it's dark, that I actually look forward to!

    You probably think I'm mad

Interesting, and I don't doubt that's the case. I've just checked, and it's currently 17°C right now in our lounge, with no heating on whatsoever, which for me is perfectly comfortable. It's just the walls retaining the residual heat from the sun we had here for most of the day, and the house is very well insulated.

I agree that some get over reliant on full blast heating when there is no need for it. I know Winter is the time when our immune systems are most vunerable and moving from stuffy to cold environments doesnt help.
Yeah, some shops you go into are dreadfully stuffy, with the heating on full blast, and I simply have to walk out or I start to feel ill.

The same applies with some houses I go into. I just find the heat generated by your average central heating system. or gas or electric fire, rather suffocating and oppressive. It's a very 'dry' heat, which is completely different from that created by something such as a log fire.

I certainly wouldn't be without ours, even though it's a lot of work to maintain and keep clean!
