She worked with some big names in her early years, her sister was in "Fanny". Suzy was a classically trained pianist, much more to her than "Devil Gate Drive" which still makes me cringe when I see the formation dancing.

Mmm... I'd dispute that. Think about it when you pronounce the word...
'Grandad' sounds like Gran-dad; there is no emphasis on the 'd', to indicate the necessary 'Grand'. Whereas, when you say 'Granddad', it sounds like Grand-dad.
You're therefore emphasising the necessary 'd', in order to indicate the 'Grand'. Sometimes, despite there being two official 'correct' spellings, one is still more correct than the other

The point you've raised is one of phonetics, and linguistics.
Go to most places in Lancashire and Yorkshire and you'll generally hear it pronounced as Gran-dad.
Go over to Scouseland and you'll often hear it pronounced as Grand-dad, although the first D is almost skipped over.
With the gradual homogenisation of spoken language either pronunciation could become the norm, and so that spelling might become the predominant one.
I wouldn't lay bets on it going either way, 'cause you might well loose your money
