    Default SJS pre amps

What sort of character do the older models have? In particular the model 1?

    Any experience?
And would it work with a Quad 909?

I had a Model 2 5687 version. It had 6db of gain if I recall correctly so not a gain monster ... that's what you need with a 909 which is quite sensitive.

It's a very good preamp, it adds a sense of drive, sophistication and vividness without imposing its own tone colours. Up wth the best.

The early Model 1 and 2 preamps used 5687 and had 8 and 6 dB of gain respectively.
Most are the later versions which used 6111 and had 8 or 10dB of gain.
My one concern with matching to the 909 is the 20k input impedance of the Quad. The preamps were designed to work into a load of 50k or above. I would say 20k is on the limit. It may be satisfactory but I haven't tried it so can't give you a firm assurance.

Btw if you could get up to Manchester with your Quad you could possibly listen to one.
