    Default Tore myself another asshole

Quite the opposite of a stroke of genius.
For the last 14 years i have been listening to my NS-1000 via a NAD C740 receiver.
    Long story shortened.
Bought the Yamahas about 35 years ago with a NAD class A amp. Superb sound.
Twenry years ago a glas of red wine sipped into the amp instead of the wine in me.
Having not much financial headroom and a wife wanting a radio I bought the NAD C740. Superb.
    For the money.
So finally last week I was able to buy the two Quad 504-2 monoblocks, advertised on this forum by John.
Wonderfull person to deal with, by the way. Sorry John, the rest of this story might be a bit of a shock.
Shipping went fine, connected them to the Yamahas. Revelation.
So much space, low end tight, seperation. Happy person.
But then I wanted to try the other speakercables.
Now i should confess I never changed the speakerterminals on the Yamahas.
I SHORTEND THE LEADS ON ONE OF TE SPEAKERS.
    So. One quad 405-2 demolished.
Man do I feel sick, stupid, gutted.....
Luckily I have been able to contact Duncan(Tubehunter), who has kindly agreed to try bringing the defective powerboard back to live.
So there may still be a happy ending.
I had to get this of my chest, tell about some nice people on this forum and I have to kill the time waiting for the board to return.

D'oh. Oh well, not the end of the world, highly annoying, yes but sortable.

Hang in there bro! and thanks for the kind words

Was talking to a nurse today who used to work in the local children's hospital. Spent a year there one week when my daughter was born. 5 minutes there will put a power amp problem into perspective.

    Still really annoying though

Well at least the amp can be fixed or replaced. Not so easy to do that with those speakers so it could have been worse.

have to confess I am so prone to doing this sort of thing that I never swap anything around without powering down absolutely everything.

I see people swapping speakers in and out with the amps still on and it makes me wince every time. But they always seem vey confident doing it.
    Current Lash Up:

I had them switched off. But on listening with the new cables, i wanted to turn the speaker a little bit outwards. Being a ns-1000 it's up close against the wall. And that's when the cable shorted.

Yamaha NS-1000 has really flimsy speaker connectors. I have seen some rewired with WBT speaker connectors for a good speaker wire connection

I once connected the two +ve spkr terminals on the amp to the one spkr.
shld have had the back of amp well lit and put the glasses on
Blew one OTR on a sansui au111. Ouch... that was difficult to put right,
anyway easier to fix the Quad than if u somehow damaged the NS1000

Ouch - I would have been very furious with myself if that had happened to me. You seem to be taking it well.

I try to use electrical insulation tape to separate inputs or outputs whenever I think there may be a risk of connections touching each other through movement etc.

Just to think, as JohnJo knows, I seriously considered getting those 405s from him. Blame me for not getting them as you would not have had this problem if I had.

Good to hear the problem can be sorted.
