I know little about the different tape types, but Studio Spares do SM900 and SM911 from 1/4" to 2" on NAB Spools, if that helps.

Some nice sound bites Alan, on some very nice machines.
I remember back in my collage days, lusting after one of those Technics RtoR in a shop window on the Headrow (Leeds).
That and a Technics Elcassette, plus some nice Quad amps, made up the display.
The fact I can still remember the moment says it all about the impression it made.

Yes the Technics RS1500 is a very impressive machine with a unique tape path and switchable 2 and 4 track play back.
when I bought it I did a couple of minor repairs but I haven't used it much since as I know it really needs a recap of all electrolytic's, still sounds great as it is though.

Yes you can buy Alloy nab hub, plastic nab hub or pancake priced individually
I have bought most of mine from thomann
https://www.thomann.de/gb/recording_tape.html
Tapecity is supposed to be cheaper but they are often out of stock
I buy Pancakes as they are cheaper and I buy blank reels from here
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/QUANTEGY-4...-/281935717086
These reels are excellent and like new and run very true, if you buy 10 you ask the seller for a deal
Most of the RMGI alloy reels I got were really poor IMO so thats why I started doing it this way

Can anybody confirm that nab pancakes are a universal fitting and that there are no size anomalies..
it was suggested to me by a retailer that buying tape in pancake form would not work on my
Teac x1000R.... I have my doubts because he only advised of this when I asked for RTM LPR90 in pancake nab form and he didn't have any in stock....

I'm Peter.
To be honest, I have never encountered any size differences in NAB Hubs and I have personally purchased many Pancake Type tapes from different sources. (Including RTM LPR90 Tape)
I believe that NAB Hubs are a universal size. Additionally, I have about 10/12 spare hubs and they are all identical in size.

He probably thinks you are going to use the pancakes as they are which on some machines you can by having the machine angled back or laying flat
and using metal plates instead of reels ( not sure I would want to do this with the machine upright ).
If you are going to insert the pancake into a reel by undoing the three screws then you will have no problem with any size issues.
