For me, my turntable has evolved into sounding more like a really good CD player [stable and effortless with very low coloration], but with the inherent musical qualities of analogue.

Well, you've heard my T/T, Jim, at NEBO. My CD player largely sounds like a digital version of that

But has you CD not 'evolved' through various upgrades?
    Main system : VPI Scout 1.1 / JMW 9T / 2M Black / Croft 25R+ / Croft 7 / Heco Celan GT 702

    Second System : Goldring Lenco GL75 / AT95EX / Pioneer SX590 / Spendor SP2

Yeah I know, but you get the point!

In all honesty though, the upgrades (mods) you mention are *absolutely fundamental* to the sound the Sonys produce now, and the type of musical presentation Martin and I have described. It's all about marrying the best of old and new technology - that's what the majority of my system is about.

I remember all too well what they sounded like from stock, and trust me, while they were good (they needed to have been, otherwise I wouldn't have bought them in the first place, or more importantly spent £2k on mods if I hadn't heard some potential), there's no way they'd be able to compete with the kind of kit they can now.

The situation is almost identical with the Techy, which I also recognised the potential in, modded it as I felt was best, and the rest as they say is history

Are you tempted by the new SP10R when it comes out. Some of the engineering and technology used for speed stability etc and isolation sounds very tasty?

No probs. A potential purchase of an SP10R essentially hinges on two things: 1) what the final price will be, and 2) whether I can compare one in a plinth to my current T/T

I'd need to know that it fundamentally improves on what I have now, and crucially, in a way I can't remedy with further mods to my existing T/T... Essentially, this means that the motor unit itself is just overall better. It should be, but for me the proof of the pudding is always in the listening!
