You'd be forgiven for thinking that driving as fast as you bloody well can was also a part of the driving test. Driving standards around this part of the world are, at times, very poor. Texting on the phone whilst on the move is very popular as is not indicating which way you are pointing your car. Boils my p*ss.

As for my driving - considerate to all other road users.

Is there a bit in the Highway Code where it says that it is perfectly okay to stop your car right in the middle of the road whilst you nip into a shop or someone's house, providing you put you hazard lights on first?

Because that happens a lot round here.

Round here they've even stopped bothering with the hazard warning lights.

In my experience it is motorway lorry drivers who are the worse for that: indicating as they change lanes! You have to develop a 'sixth sense' and anticipate drivers not signalling - just as you have to anticipate drivers cutting you up without warning.

One of the problems I have is at roundabouts where you are waiting to join, but a car is on the roundabout on the inside lane. If he is going further around the roundabout, he is not obliged to signal until he has passed the exit before the one he wants, but I have had drivers not do that, so now I'm especially cautious: no doubt to the exasperation of drivers waiting behind me.

I have a route that has a particularly difficult right turn, I open my window and give a hand signal, most drivers are quite surprised to see this, and mainly give way to let me in.

I remember when hand signals were de rigueur too, much nicer than the modern day finger signals that proliferate these days - and that's just the young ladies!

Firstly, the drivers behind you simply need to be patient until the 'coast is clear' for you to go. Dawdlers at roundabouts piss me off, but only when they sit there, when the coast is evidently clear, and don't move until there are no cars visible for about a mile! Your actions don't come into that category.

In terms of the bit in bold above, that wasn't how I was taught to drive. Let's take a small roundabout, with three possible exits, on a standard road in a town centre, as an example....

When approaching said roundabout, if I simply wanted to turn left, I'd indicate so in advance and take exit one.

If I wanted to go straight ahead, when approaching the roundabout, I'd indicate RIGHT in advance, until I'd passed exit one, then indicate LEFT and take exit two.

If I wanted to run right, when approaching the roundabout, I'd indicate RIGHT in advance, and maintain that indication all the way round the roundabout, until finally indicating left and taking exit three.

In short, no matter which exit I was leaving the roundabout at, I'd ALWAYS be indicating my intentions, and which direction I was travelling in, to other drivers. What you've said above would mean that no-one else but you would know where you were going until you had passed the exit before the one you wanted, so that's wrong.

When using a roundabout, no matter which exit you're taking, you should be indicating your intentions (as outlined above) to other road users present, BEFORE entering or leaving the roundabout.

if your going more than halfway round a roundabout you should select the right side lane and indicate right until passed the exit before your desired one then change indicator to left and move to left lane.
