It (the new SP-10R) sure does sound impressive on the two occasions i’ve heard it! So impressive actually that my friend ordered one

Yeah read it a few weeks back in WHSmith.
Very impressive thing and an excellent review of it.

Can facilitate multiple arms and so on but the top version is about £20k .....

The smart money would buy a tidy SP10, have it properly serviced, add one of the many excellent arms and carts that would do it justice and have loads of cash left over for plenty other things too

That's very true but for all that audiophiles bang on about hearing this and listening to that, the one thing they can't listen to is advice

I guess you'd have to do a blind comparison between a fully fettled SP10 and the new one. And then if you can hear any difference you have to decide if that difference is worth the thick end of £17K
    Current Lash Up:

    TEAC VRDS 701T > Sony TAE1000ESD > Krell KSA50S > JM Labs Focal Electra 926.

Not true - the SP-10R motor unit and PSU retails in the UK at £7995 including VAT. The SL-1000R, eg the complete deck with plinth and tonearm is £13995 including VAT. Technics have made the SP-10R motor unit backwards compatible with old SP-10 plinths, so if someone already has something like a lovely Technics Obsidian SP-10 plinth, then only the new motor unit (and a tonearm) is required, and that makes the SP-10R potentially better value.

I don't sell Technics, btw. This pricing information is not difficult to find online.

No idea of all the exact figures for pricing perpertations or pricing accuracy HFN have given.

My comments stated £20K for top version which is the SP10R supplied with plinth, arm etc.

In that guise it becomes the SL - 1000R which I should have made clear.

Quote HFN June 2018 edition review, page 34, second paragraph

'Two years on from the launch of the superb SL-1200GAE (HFN Jun '16), the brand is back with a flagship broadcast standard turntable worthy of the name.
The SP-10R is the motor unit, and when supplied in its bespoke plinth with Technics' new tonearm, the package becomes the 'Reference Class' SL-1000R, and sells for a cool £20,000.'

HFN should have checked their copy before publication because it’s simply wrong - the 20k figure that they incorrectly state is probably the US dollar price. The fact remains that Technics’ UK retail pricing is, at £13995, well below £20k for the SL-1000R.

Still a substantial difference between that and the cost of a well-sorted SP10 though. Even a mark 3 with a top bollocks arm and plinth.

Don't get me wrong if I had money to burn I'd go for the new one every time. But if I was stretching it to afford the new one I'd have a good think about it, and a listen of the two of them, before I ponied up the dough for the new one.

I’d love to hear them side by side too.

Would be interesting but I'm still in no doubt that if you shopped clever and copped hold of an SP10 MK2, properly serviced with a very nice arm and quality mc on it you'd possibly not be missing much against the new one.

Of course that's just my own gut feeling balanced with the SPPV you'd be getting with the SP10 MK2 against the cost of the new, but what do I know ?
