Default Extracting DVD-A to FLAC files.

OK, having experienced the joy of hi-res music last night, and seeing that I can play it via my iMac without needing a pesky SACD player, I'm now trying to find out if it's possible to extract DVD-A to files which my Mac can play.

There seem to be a reasonable number of DVD-A discs available and I'm wondering if I can buy them and rip the HD audio to a FLAC file?

There is a program called DVDA Explorer which can read the MLP files on a DVD-A disc and extract them. Google it.

I use Squeezebox to access to all 4 Hi-Res albums I have on DVD-A. Foobar2000 is equally as good.

Most music DVD's (DVD-V by definition) have 16/48 as bit/sample rate, although occasionally you'll come across one which is 24/48.

That works fine on DVD-V stuff, but it won't touch the MLP files on DVD-A discs.
I've used both sets of software.

Unfortunately so. You can download a fully working version for trial, so if you're organised.......

I've used DVD-A explorer to rip all 2 of my DVD-Audio discs. R.E.M.'s "Reveal" which ripped fine on the Mac (but isn't a very good album either in content or sound quality) and Queen's "A night at the opera" (which sounds marvellous) but DVD-A explorer on the Mac didn't want to read this one for some reason. It seems that the Mac version is a little flaky. I managed to get it to rip without any trouble on the Windows version though.

Whilst your getting into Hi-res material and if you have access to a Windows PC, check your CD collection for HDCD discs and if you have any, get hold of a copy of HDCD.exe, then rip the discs as WAV and pass them through the HDCD decoder. The few discs I have (and not all of them are marked with the HDCD logo) sound very nice indeed.

There is this for any Windows users:

    http://www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor/

I think it's only for video discs too. I've used it in the past but can't remember. Let me check.
