I like the steam idea! But how does that tonearm work on the wrong side? I though the photo was reversed, but even that doesn’t fix it. Or does it?

When playing the arm is parallel to the rear edge. Swing it 90 degrees to the left, or anti clockwise if you prefer.

    DAC/pre = Rotel RC 1572
    Power amp = ADA PF201

How does it manage speed control? Can't see a "governor" on it.

Would you use paraffin for 33rpm and petrol for 78's?

    Good point!

I was always impressed by the “clock works”, on old victrola’s, that kept the speed fairly steady on 78’s, with the crank sticking out the side, wind it up and go, in fact it worked extremely well for a completely mechanical device.

I remember taking those sorts of clockwork gramophone motors apart when I was a kid. The governor was a couple of bobweights pulling a felt or leather clutch brake into contact with a steel plate/washer. You had to be careful prising the mainspring out or it would leap out and slice you.

Ive pondered buying one on a few occasions, just to have as an antique, a working display of history. It’s amazing how many are out there for sale, and are expensive but not impossibly so. I just don’t know where I’d put it?
