Agree it doesn't look 'quite right', but if the plugs are pushed home reasonably well, and not too much strain is being put on the sockets, I wouldn't worry.

Stick a thin piece of card in between the plugs so they aren't physically touching.

Would make no difference. The grounds of the RCA sockets will be connected inside the chassis anyway.

On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio”

There are various ways the grounds could be connected internally so it would be a good idea, if OCD about these things, to use that piece of thin cardboard... It will probably be fine though.

Just cut of the old plugs and solder on some new thinner ones would seem the obvious solution.... The insulation may have to be cut back to allow the entry of such thick cable but some heat shrink sleeving should make it look neat again

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

agree with comments about adaptors , better to find a thinner profile plug . I would be asking advice from paul coupe at rfc components

Personally, if the sockets have common negative as is usual (but not exclusively so), I'd not worry about the plugs touching.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Why not simply loosen one of the metal protectors on the lead and move it slightly away?
