Default Dual 1229 and CL240 Help!

    Hi everyone,

Just purchased my first vintage turntable, receiver and speakers via ebay last week!

    Dual 1229
    Sony 6036A
    Dual CL240

Looking forward to my vinyl journey and chatting with some of you! I already have a few things I might need some help with!

So, I received the turntable last week, and finally managed to take the time to unbox and set up last night.
Unfortunately on unpacking and testing the turntable I noticed that the speed control lever is stuck on 78 and wont budge, I didn't want to force it incase I broke it.

I then loosened the transport screws and inserted the stylus cartridge before trying the start lever. The platter did not spin and the tone arm did not move?
I manually rotated the platter and there was a click from the tone arm and the start lever returned to the middle.

I'm unsure if there is anything further I should do to ensure it is working or if it's now an expensive decorational item...(I contacted ebayer today and awaiting a response)

This brings me onto my next query, which proves I am utterly new to this...

The speakers didn't come with any cables, so I bought some lengths of copper speaker cable 1.5mm THK.
I knew the it was a spade or bare wire connection to the back of the receiver which is fine, but I'm unsure about how to connect to the speakers.

I thought it was a banana plug connection but when I got home i realised it's just a slotted opening. Do i just insert the bare wire ends into it?

Image attached or turntable, receiver and back of speakers.

If anyone could help I'd be really grateful.

    Best,

    Graeme

Dual turntables are high quality, but rather complex. If it doesn't function send it back. It would cost a lot to fix, assuming you could find anybody to take it on.

The Sony tuner/amp is a nice unit and should sound decent enough.

I don't know that particular Dual speaker, but they should be OK. The speaker connection on the rear is a DIN socket and requires the corresponding plug that looks like this:

DIN speaker plugs are easy to come by, try ebay. (the smaller round pin is the positive)

The Dual 1229 is a fabulous player!

It looks like it needs some TLC but if you don't know someone in the UK your out of luck.

Here in The Netherlands we have a guy in Almere who is a guru with Duals.

I could contact him and see if he knows someone in England?

Graeme is in Berlin. He probably stands more chance of finding a repairer there, but it ain't gonna be cheap. I still say it should be sent back, especially if it was sold as fully functional.

If Graeme is not familiar with working on or maintaining turntables, his best bet is something simple and reliable like a Pioneer PL-12D. Which will be cheap and sound good enough for an intro into vintage record players.

PM DSJR on AOS. He is the Dual guru and should be able to advise on repair and service.

Firstly, do remember the 1229 is forty five or so years old and despite the engineering excellence in the design, it uses lubricants which dry out after this time and also more importantly, PLEASE DON'T TRY THE ARM HEIGHT ADJUSTER UNTIL THE RUBBER SLEEVE IS REPLACED!!!!!!! ***

If you don't know about turntables, this one may not be for you unless fully serviced first!

*** - The two position arm-height adjustment (single and auto) uses shafts sliding in guides and one of these guides has two ball bearings located by a rubber sleeve. This rubber does well for over thirty years but eventually hardens and splits, losing the balls and the whole thing then jams, often breaking the 'Dearing Ring' attached to the tonearm gimbal assembly underneath. All is not lost however...

Vinyl Engine is your friend regarding these endearingly wonderful old record playing machines and the resident guru there - Klaus (DualCan) knows these things backwards and has a wonderful site with detailed procedures on stripping them down to the last c-clip and screw. Not saying a cooler European climate will be as severe on these lubricants as a hotter and dryer (in places) US one, but you need to know what you're getting into. Klaus is native German speaking and also contributes to one of the Dual forums in Germany - have a Google and see what you can find - I think it's www.dual-board.de

Sorry, I'm a hugely confessed fan of this era of Duals and for all my sins, I seem to have collected a few, currently 1009sk2, 1019, 1214, 610, 701, but sadly not the 1229 which I owned for years from new, 'lent' to a friend's son thirty years ago and never got back when he split from his lady and subsequently left the UK leaving the deck with her, whom I didn't know

Why bother with what some here would sneeringly refer to as an 'auto-changer?' Well, the idler drive is as good as any Lenco in my experience as long as the motor and looped wiring to it is behaving itself regarding isolation, the tonearm can happily accept some amazingly good cartridges (Koetsu Black, OC9 and Ortofon Mc30 Super anyone???) of mixed compliances and the auto mechanism in proper fettle is so gentle and kind to delicate styli - even the stacking facility was vinyl-safe although no HiFi nut would ever do this unless it's 7" singles.. The sound of a good one is up to lower Rega standards I feel and I'm very much enjoying the 1019 and 701 I use on a regular basis at present, although the electronics on the early 70's direct drive 701 can be temperamental nowadays...

Maybe not now - and the team responsible for these older models were taken over in 1981 and 505 apart (which continues today, at least until the parts bins run out!), the past was buried for a while, but who knows... The US market for Duals was huge, so don't discount good US service people (if anyone reading this hails from there).

Warpurgis, Thanks for the speaker connection help! I've bagged myself a set from Ebay!

Hi I2paq, thanks for the offer but as Warpurgis mentions I'm in Germany, just moved here from UK.
So yes I hope I'm best placed for Dual technical help!

I absolutely fell in love with these turntables, and have been waiting patiently for one to come up.

DSJR, thanks for all your suggestions and help. I'll shuffle over to those boards and see if I can make some headway.
I fear I may have the will, but not the knowledge.

I'm in dialogue with the ebayer, but he's not being overly helpful.
I'd love to try get it working again rather than send back and come to some agreement with the seller.
I fear it may have been damaged in transit - he unfortunately didn't remove the platter when posting.

Maybe if I can get it checked over by a specialist then I can decide what to do in regards to trying to fix the issue.

    Thanks again all!

They're pretty tough and if the platter has caused damage, I suspect it'll be mainly by scratching the top plate!

If you haven't already, join the Vinyl Engine site. the 'Library' there has all the service manuals in German and English and the Dual forum 'room' has dozens of threads regarding fettling the 1229 and 1229Q.

My own 1214 was given to me as scrap. OK when pictured by the seller, by the time it got to the destination, the plinth was in pieces, the platter had carved bad scuffs in the frontal aluminium trim, the arm was completely totalled with the main bearing pillar tilted and broken tonearm bearing 'yoke,' the arm rest had gone and underneath, the mechanism was all but swimming in grease.* It was a fun project, as I got a replacement arm from 'organdonorparts' in the US - incredibly helpful, not expensive and excellent despatch service, arm rest from an ebay seller in Germany and I also thought I'd 'do a Marco' and customise this deck with a heavier 1216 cast platter to offer less rumble and general noise (these two decks basically differ only in details otherwise). The thing gradually came together in a 1257 plinth after stripping down, properly, *very lightly* greased with 'Alvania' grease, the arm mounting pillar was straightened, the tonearm horizontal bearing balls replaced as they're not captive on this one (it's an education in itself working out which way round the bearing 'castellated races' go, because if one is wrong, the fixing nuts underneath don't lock properly and it means stripping the arm back out, catching the balls as you go End of the day, I have a quiet running delightful player able to take some extremely capable modern cartridges. The plinth was cheap but shallower than the motor requires by a mm or two, so I had to 'stretch' the suspension springs a little, but it's fine and looks good too (I haven't opened a new image hosting account, but currently, Photobucket stinks for bods like me as it's now blocked all the images I had from being posted here and elsewhere )

I doubt you'd need to do too much to your deck and in any case, the tonearm, is rather different at the bearing end as well as longer, being almost a true 9" type. The speed adjustment mechanism is easily stripped out for cleaning and instructions can be found where I suggested. DON'T FORCE ANYTHING!!! If the platter looks true to the deck plate, it's easily removed and you can then get to the motor mounts, idler assembly and the main bearing/main cam fixings.

    * Lube kits are available and I think 'Dualfred' in Germany should be first call - you'll need a 'steuerpimpel' too - hehe...
