Agreed, yet it doesn't stop some folk even now obsessing over measured distortion in equipment design, almost to the exclusion of all else. That '70s mentality' is unfortunately still embedded today in the psyche of some designers and users alike, whilst they blissfully miss the bigger picture, which arguably in some ways is more important.

Some of the best stuff I've heard is designed by folk who are rather obsessive about measurements, yet their offerings sound superb.
It depends on what you're measuring and why.
These same folk actually listen to what they're designing and building, and manage not to lose sight of the bigger picture.

Sorry if I've missed it but did we establish a position on the Linear vs SMPS question?
One of these days... I'm going to cut you into little pieces.

Lol, yes, as I know whom you're referring to, and completely agree! And that's largely because *ultimately* they trust their ears more than their test equipment

However, I've also heard equipment (and complete systems) belonging to 'obsessive measurists' that I wouldn't give house room to, for all the reasons I've previously mentioned!

Well I've listened and I wouldn't let SMPS anywhere near my system.

An over active imagination is something that unfortunately afflicts the majority of audiophiles...
I will be showing in my mythbusters thread that ultimately much equipment needing an external supply is pretty much impervious to any effects from the PSU when properly designed. There will of course be some ifs and buts....
I'd happily run everything in my system from external SMPS provided that the output from them was properly dealt with.

The worst PSU's in hi fi are the ones you never hear anyone complaining about... because they've not been "told" there is something wrong with them in order to imagine that they can then hear a problem! I'm talking about the ones powering virtually every power amp

I think you might be referring to a circuit that Hitachi published for their complementary power MOSFETs. Maplin used to sell a very popular power amp kit that used the Hitachi circuit and I made an amp with a pair of them many years ago. It was actually a very good amp but I've heard better since then.

Yes, I agree. Power amp distortion is most often quoted at full - or nearly full - power output, but what about what's happening at the other end of the power spectrum? In my opinion that's more important.
