An over active imagination is something that unfortunately afflicts the majority of audiophiles...
I will be showing in my mythbusters thread that ultimately much equipment needing an external supply is pretty much impervious to any effects from the PSU when properly designed. There will of course be some ifs and buts....
I'd happily run everything in my system from external SMPS provided that the output from them was properly dealt with.
The worst PSU's in hi fi are the ones you never hear anyone complaining about... because they've not been "told" there is something wrong with them in order to imagine that they can then hear a problem! I'm talking about the ones powering virtually every power amp
