Default Reecommendations for a nice, easy first time DIY project?

I am looking at a nice little project to undertake that is not too expensive, but will introduce me to the world of DIY HiFi projects.
I am half tempted by the Graham Slee DIY phono stage (Genera?) to start of with, but I was wondering if there was anything else out there that would be suitable.

It has to be relatively cheap, in case I mess it up.

Plenty of cheap and half decent DIY projects on ebay from Chinese sellers. Small amps and phono stages, etc. Some come without power supplies and can be used with a 'wall wart'.

Or, what about building some simple full range speakers?
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

What about the EAR 834P boards that are doing the rounds, I have a fully built version coming from Germany.

Malcolm (willbewill) does a kit to build a VSPS phono stage which is both cheap and good quality. There's a photo guide to the build on Lencoheaven but you'd need to be a member there as it's in the member's only section.

It's battery powered so no nasty shocks

    Thanks.

I will have a look as I joined up there when I was thinking of getting a Lenco.

There's a design for a valve line stage in the diy section which I donated to the site. It's pretty simple but may be out of the league of a complete novice as there is just a circuit diagram. Colin very kindly designed a PCB for it, but as there was zero interest no PCB's were made and I didn't even get round to "peer checking" the PCB layout...

It appears that the curse of photo bucket has removed not only these but all my photos of amp builds etc... But for reasons I can't guess at about a week after all other photobucket stuff disappeared.. TWATS!!!
