Lol... Well, that's cool. However, the problem is work is such an integral part of some people's lives that they simply don't *know* anything else, including how to enjoy themselves!

In essence, they've completely lost focus on what life should be all about.

My outgoings were almost nil; I spent very little on food, and back then the idea of forking out a couple of quid for a coffee would have seemed laughable.

I'm not in the slightest bit 'driven', and it was only the acquisition of responsibilities (mortgage, wife and two children) that got me out of bed in the morning. Other people can't abide being idle, and will work until they (literally in some cases) drop.
I was also unemployed in my early twenties and it was a great time in my life. There was literally no work, not even manual labouring so no need to feel guilty about 'dossing'. Nothing to lose, nothing I had to do except sign on once a fortnight. Got used to having no money, discovered ways to work around it. On the minus side I did sometimes worry about the future; you can't go on like that forever. Once I had a mortgage that was it, I had to stay in work. Fortunately by then there was work, I was always able to get something and keep paying it despite being made redundant twice. If I'd been stuck on the dole then I would have lost the house, that would all have been a bit grim.

I have a couple of friends who have interesting, high powered jobs and enjoy them and regard them as a hobby. MY father was the same. I've only had one job like that and it only lasted two years. Now I'm happy as long as I don't hate my work, and if I start hating it I can quit without worrying about losing the house.

Yes, and that mentality, when taken to extremes, is part of the problem. What you do (or should do), once you've reached retiring age, is replace work with a hobby you love, and then 'throw yourself into' that, like you did with your job.

That way you won't 'miss' working, thus can survive without it. It also helps if you're married or have a partner and/or kids, which helps you focus on other things than just work, such as enjoying their company and seeing a bit of the world outside of your own back door.

Quite simply, in everyone's life, there should be a predetermined (pleasurable) 'end goal', so when you're young, you work towards achieving that goal - and once done, you simply sit back and enjoy it!

Plenty of people enjoy their work so it isn't really 'work' to them. What you are saying makes sense if you hate every minute of it but how many people does that apply to? Plus the irony is that if you have a high paid job the odds are that you do enjoy it. If you have a low paid job not only will you likely not enjoy doing it but you will be poor when you retire, you won't be living it up or jetting around the world on holiday.

I don't usually work more than 9-10 months in a year on average these days. But that's my choice in not just picking up any contract under the sun.

I'm a fussy freelancer these days. But not working for a bit really helps you chill and in my case do a lot more swimming etc etc.

That's not what I mean. You have to see work, whether you love your job or not, simply as the facilitator that (eventually) enables you to do what you really want to do, such as enjoying time with your loved ones, free from any stress or worry about bills, as you've effectively 'prepaid' for the likely remainder of your existence.

Work, for any successful person with a healthy outlook on life, should *never* be the be-all-and-end-all, or your very reason for living. If it is, then I'm sorry, that's not a healthy place to be. And I can almost guarantee you that most in that unfortunate position aren't genuinely happy, whether they care to admit it or not.

Life is ALL about feeling happy and fulfilled as a person. Ultimately, nothing else matters, and if that's not the case, you simply won't genuinely be happy.

Plus the irony is that if you have a high paid job the odds are that you do enjoy it. If you have a low paid job not only will you likely not enjoy doing it but you will be poor when you retire, you won't be living it up or jetting around the world on holiday.
Yes, you may well enjoy your highly paid job, if you're in it for the RIGHT reasons and are genuinely happy.

However, many people I know with highly paid jobs simply have them to fund a certain lifestyle, which they feel that they should have, in order to fit in with others or consider themselves a 'success', and although they may *seem* happy on the outside, underneath it's all a pretence, often including the lifestyle that they have to work almost round the clock to afford.

That's not a life; it's merely an existence. I'd absolutely hate that, and it's what drives many people to heart attacks (or strokes) with the stress of it all.

If you're in a low-paid job, things may well be shit, for different reasons, BUT if you're happy with a simple life and few material possessions, thus have little debt and live within your means, overall feel happy and fulfilled as a person, have all the time you need to be with your loved ones and are 100% in control of your life, then that can be the greatest feeling in the world - and often one many millionaires never get to experience.

my old mate loved working and especially the job he had most of his life. didnt want to retire but was forced to. became depressed not working and tried other jobs but hankered for his old one, then his brain went; stroke or something like that. then had a growth appear and soon never knew anyone. died a few months later. all very upsetting. we all felt if he had stayed in his job he would have lived longer. some folk dont like having a lot of spare time you see. I can understand it, as I dont like too much myself. But he was different and actually lived for his job. A lot of old folk did. he never smiled after he retired
