    Default Greetings

New to this forum. Looking to build up a vinyl based system. I have 1000+ Vinyl albums in my possession collected between 70's - mid 90's. I also have Keith Monk record cleaner I bought for £75 in early 90's. So far I have Thorens TD 160 Mk2. Pioneer S400. Tending to look at budget end of things. Looking to acquire tonearm, Cartridge, MM phono stage and speakers. Interested in Rega RB250, early Mordant Short Festivals or similar. Any suggestions welcomed.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

    Hello Rob. Welcome to AOS.

Keep us posted with how you get on revitalising your system. We like to hear what folk are doing.

If you're interested in the older Mordaunt Short speakers, I'd suggest looking for a pair of Pageant 2's rather than the Festivals, the Pageants are very superior.

Of course, you could always consider the first series Mission 780SE as an alternative. They are even better in my view, having owned both.

    Enjoy the forum,
    Geoff.

Cheers Geoff, I like Mission speakers, I had some 852's in the 80's. Are the 780SE easy to find? Many thanks!

Usually a pair or two on ebay each week. A look on Gumtree may be useful too. Prices seem to be between £60 and £90 as a rule.

The model that looks like this:

Not the later version with sculpted grilles, which are a totally different speaker.

The 852 is also a very decent speaker, even by modern standards.
