“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

You shouldn't. Don't listen to all the idiotic scare stories, The result will be a big fudge and everything will carry on as before. There really is no other possible outcome in the real world.

The important thing is we have drawn a line in the sand which will hopefully mean we will not drift along into becoming a region of a faceless European super-state. We'll never have the stupid currency and we won't have to fly their stinking flag anymore.

The thing is, it's the EU that looks organised and 'stable', ready for the negotiations to start, while we have no Govt., and probably a Brexit deal written by the DUP. The Irish will be the tail wagging the dog or else the Tories lose power.

You have to say though, May called it right. She said there would be a cobbled together coalition propped up by terrorist sympathising extremists. That's exactly what we have got.

Oh the election thing is a total cluster-f**k I don't dispute that for a minute. I said it was a mistake to call an election right from the off. People make the most awful errors of judgement once they start to believe their own press. Watch it happen to Corbyn in the coming months. (If it doesn't I will start having some respect for him).

Yes, a complete mess and looks bad. Good job politicians don't actually run the country. Or negotiate anything. That's what the Civil Service is for.

I see May's special needs advisers have resigned with some mealy-mouthed excuses.

No bloody idea. How do these people get these jobs?

Everyone knows that in the manifesto and the campaign you promise jam today and even more jam tomorrow. Even Corbyn has sussed that out. Or one of his crew did anyway. Whatever you say in the manifesto or the campaign isn't legally binding, that's already been tested in the Courts.

When you get into office and someone complains that you haven't done something you promised, you just tell them it is being worked on and that something will be done. Even though in reality it isn't and it won't. Blair had that technique mastered.

May's equivalent to Corbyn's promises was the 'reduce immigration to the tens of thousands' pledge/promise/vague hope which she had failed deliver to in her years as Home Secretary, and which was only ever intended as bait for the more simple-minded UKIP demographic.
