Default Please help clear up a question about MONOBLOCKS

What are the advantages of monoblocks over simply getting a power amplifier or preamp designed to have dual mono power supplies and output?

I used to have monoblocks , several times . I believe some folks like shorter speaker cable to get them nearer the speakers . actually my current class A single stereo power amp is better than any monoblocks I have ever had .

yes its a phenomenal amp , the msb monoblocks made quite an impression on many somewhile back and then they bought out this stereo version which is just beautiful. almost valvelike but with none of the drawbacks . its remote control and deadly quiet too .

wouldn't think there would be any in general although some folk will think there is. I quite like monoblocks but its more for the look I think deep down. Like anything there can be extenuating circumstances

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Often just doubles up the power. Quad QMPs are basically QSPs internally bridged. Some like Bryston can be switched externally into mono bridged mode. The only sense I can see in low powered valve monoblocks is to split the weight in half.

The weight of big power amps is an issue, dual mono with two transformers and heat sinks would just be too heavy. Some stereo amps have just one transformer, think Hegel.

Speaker cable length is irrelevant, just isn't an issue.

Not totally relevant, but I understand the word is normally spelt without a 'k'.

When I owned a Meridian 101 Series amplifier system,
my Dealer told me the performance of the 105 monobloc ( or 'mono bloc' )
    was definitely superior.
In the end I turned my 101/103 into a 101/103D setup
    That was back in 1979.

Perhaps things have changed spelling-wise now we're in 2017...

Personally I found my Quad 405 monoblocks sounded better with short speaker cables and long interconnects so being able to site the amps close to the speakers can be an advantage.

Using a pair of bridged stereo power amps as monoblocks will only give a 3db increase in maximum loudness in comparison to a similar single power amp used in stereo mode.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Also I find that things might not sound as natural and coherent when you start bridging or biamping.
