I think the current leader gets to stand by default (ISTR some hoo-hah around this point when Corbyn was challenged by Owen thingy last year). Here we go:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labour...ship_challenge

'On 12 July the National Executive Committee ruled that as the incumbent, Corbyn would automatically be included on the ballot by an 18–14 vote.[11] The party's lawyers, GRM Law, as well as James Goudie, had argued the party's constitution required Corbyn to secure nominations,[61][62] but conflicting legal advice obtained by the Labour Party leadership and UNITE from Doughty Street Chambers and Michael Mansfield, respectively, argued Corbyn should not need to obtain MP/MEP support to be placed on the ballot of a leadership election, as the party rules only mentioned the need for challengers to receive nominations, and did not explicitly specify the same requirement for the incumbent.[61][63][64]'

govt majority was about 17 seats and i expect that to increase a little, mostly at labours cost. Libs will no doubt go up a fair bit as will most of the small parties. SNP I expect to stay about same and continue as 3rd party.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

So short of a successful legal challenge to the party constitution he is there until he dies or quits of his own accord. I suppose the membership might vote him out if he loses but they will want another old-school Socialist candidate to replace him.

Really this is an age-old problem for Labour. They only get elected when they say they are not Socialists. This worked for Blair but the rank and file assumed that once he was in power they would see some proper Socialism.

But that doesn't materialise due to the fact that once you are in power it turns out that all you can do is keep fudging along day to day, even minor achievements are hugely difficult and take years. Sweeping social reforms are just a pipe-dream.

The membership don't understand this and assume it is because Blair is a 'traitor' or whatever. So they elect a proper Socialist as a leader, because when he gets power he really will do the sweeping social reforms. Except he won't get into power because he is socialist. And even if he did he still wouldn't be able to achieve the sweeping social reforms because: The Real World. It's a Catch-22 plus one.

Yes, I get that - but on the other side we have Boris - the result of in breeding at its worst.

But Diane Abbot really is a bit of a thicko whereas Johnson is very intelligent. He's not exactly a 'friend to the working man', though, so I take your point there.

I would concur with your erudite assessment. Also, if it was 'smelly-vision', her slack facial skin would be accompanied by a whiff of stale wee.

Rising acceptance of Corbyn means this has a ring of possibility about it. May becoming our 'Hilary'!

For May to suggest imagining Corbyn naked is really sinking to a new low. Playground politics is not what we need for brexit.
