Default Chord Mojo - Bargain of the century

WTF!!!! I've just bought a Chord Mojo and for a laugh tried it with my OPPO PM1 headphones. Sounded bloody fantastic so thought I would compare with my main system. Mojo certainly as good as my Cyrus DACXP Sig - Arcam rHead - OPPO PM1.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Out of interest how can you use the chord mojo instead of the dac xp signature with your mono x300s ie connection wise, and how is it as good sound quality wise. I've a similar system.

It must mean something like a Hugo tt will easily outperform the cyrus dac xp sig at a similar price, but the chord devices are digital pre amps so can they be as good on that basis. The dac xp has dual mono configuration with seperate power supplies, but the chord devices look basic in comparison. I'm not questioning if it is better, because clearly it is on your assessment, but it's interesting how it can be for a digital pre amp, what looks like a more basic set up relative to fhe dac xp sig. but then again the dac xp sig is an older design now and revamps of older models, but the chord devices are newer tech I think.

Would you sell the dac xp sig now you have the mojo, or buy a Hugo tt or similar chord device.

Not surprised. Chord don't like you to run a main system with the Mojo but as you have found out it can easily be done!
    Main system : VPI Scout 1.1 / JMW 9T / 2M Black / Croft 25R+ / Croft 7 / Heco Celan GT 702

    Second System : Goldring Lenco GL75 / AT95EX / Pioneer SX590 / Spendor SP2

The 1st thing you have to remember is that the Chord Mojo is a digital product only and therefore cannot replace a analogue pre or intergrated amp where analogue inputs are in use. I compared the Mojo and DACXP (via Arcam rHead) using the OPPO headphones only. The Mojo took music from my iPhone6 using Apple lossless files and the DACXP took flac from my NAS. I obviously used the same music for both swapping the headphones between the two. I appreciate that Apple Lossless is a different codec to flac but like a lot of people I find it difficult to tell the difference.

There is no way I'm selling the DACXP Signature. Also remember that the DACXP uses a proprietary DAC chip and the Mojo uses a powerful programmable in house chip similar to all Chord DAC's. I don't see me using it within my main system as it was purchased as a mobile device when I'm travelling. I only did the comparison out of curiosity.

To answer rmcin626's question, I understand that the Mojo can be used within a main system as it has 3 digital inputs (USB, SPDIF & Optical) and a separate USB B power input. So as long as you don't need analogue inputs, your good to go. there are 2 headphone/line outputs (stereo 3.5 jack to 2 RCA).

Thanks Clive, I would only be connecting my MacBook Pro and my Marantz CD player to the Mojo, if I was going down that route.

The arcam looks like a good solution to add a headphone amp to the DAC XP Sig and I'm guessing you use the spare set of XLR connections on the DAC XP Signature. I know Cyrus used to put a headphone socket on the pre dacs which I had, but I don't think they ever had space on the back of the DAC XP variants.

Clearly the Mojo into your mono x300's isn't possible as its a headphone amp, but I'm not surprised about the sound quality being as good as with the DAC XP sig using your decent headphones, compared to the mojo, both using the arcam headphone amp. Most of the sound comes from the headphone amp and if you are feeding different quality dacs into, if the dacs in a £3000 cyrus pre amp/dac versus a £800 chord one, and are used with a £300 headphone amp, Id hazard a guess the arcam is evening things out, very good as it is for the purpose you need it.

Your correct, I do use the spare XLR's to feed the rHead.

Actually I would be able to plug the Mojo into the MonoX300's with the use of a 3.5 stereo jack to 2 RCA plugs on a cable that splits sufficiently to cope with the 2 boxes but this was never my intention.

For the comparison I only used the rHead with the DACXP as the Mojo does not need it.
