    Would have thought you can pick up an A77 for that sort of dough.
    Not tested against an Akai but I imagine far better SQ

    I sold an Akai GX625 for £100 a year back and its still going strong as far as I know they are a great sounding deck for the money
    Here is a better model for £299

    Yes I was lucky enough to get my TD20A for only £175. Great machine.

    I would choose a Tandberg over most Akai machines, but it depends on whether you want full 10.5" spool cabability.

    I paid £500 for my Nagra IV-S, however that was 10 years ago.

    Anyway a Revox A77 would be my suggestion, doable for about your budget.

    not sure what you mean but that seller states:
