£2 eh... It would cost me about £16, including the pcb, for just the parts at trade cost, before any labour has gone into it and well before any profit has been made. I just checked the price of a TDA7297 chip and it's £2.94... You can get that down to £2 if you buy 100 at a time. Almost certainly a fake chip and the worst components known to man!

Amp now purchased. £5 delivered from China. .

Speaker cable is free. I have a choice of solid core Cu, some old Duelund 16 AWG tinned stuff, or even some Peter Walker original Quad hook up cable.

Debating what to use as a pre-amp, I already have a Little Bear tube pre-amp. Might decide for something else. We shall see.

    Have fun.

I think there are some very cheap Chinese valve preamps out there that are actually quite good as I heard one back at NEBO once. Forget who had it but he was a Scottish chap and owned some nice ancient Quad ESL's.

I've actually found my Little Bear P5-1 which cost £25 delievered. So, total cost so far £30.

The Little bear p5-1, stock photo I'm afraid but exactly like mine.

I've decided to go down the route of my Klotz IC's, not sure how much these cost to make?

This is a great idea for a thread, but the cheapest of the cheap components are bound to sound crappy. What about cheapest Chinese components that you actually rate as sounding good?!

My vote would be for SMSL amps. Something like this is silly cheap for how it sounds, but was about £10 cheaper when i bought it:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/SMSL-SA-36A.../dp/B017W13O5W

DIYers can make their own even cheaper from bare boards off eBay for peanuts, but i don't have the patience!

If you're willing to up the budget to £7 you can have 50watts and bluetooth too:

I've got a couple of the boards grant linked, used them for making 'camping speaker boxes' where I put them in a couple of skip found speakers, glued together, along with a 12v battery, a solar panel and a flying headphone cable to take feed from phone or ipad. Worked great for a beach party I went to.

Couple of quick pix. Just thought I'd get the Little Bear pre-amp out to see if it actually works. So I buddied it up with my old Quad 405-2.

    DSCN2992.jpg

It's a bit busy around the back! I've got my Teac VRDS-25x CD player doing input duties via some homemade IC's including Belden and Klotz cables.

    DSCN2993.jpg

It's not making a bad little noise so far. I've the JR149's singing away here whilst I'm modding the Lenco '75.

    Above are all expensive:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-3-to-18...-/272159153887

Had a couple of these for some time, still working and sound pretty good.

Just one on a pair of LS3/6 worked quite well.

Just out of interest this is a very cheap way to get into valves. You can have a little fun listening to valves and tube rolling at the same time. 6J1 valves are pretty cheap.

I was thinking a mains transformer was an added expense but a 12v battery would suffice. I have two motorcycle sized batteries from an emergency light that would do. May be worth a go.
