Default Phoney Income Tax Refund email. Don't open the link!

I've just received an email purporting to be from HMRC, advising me that I am due a refund.

I'm pretty sure this is phoney. It states that the claim for this refund must be made by filling an online form and gives a link.

Do NOT open this link if you receive the same!! It's possibly a 'phishing' scam, after your personal and financial details, or it could carry all sorts of malware and potentially destroy you computer.

I'm sure this is a fake, as HMRC don't have my email address.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

They've not thought that through. Refund?? It smacks of a scam right away. They would be better saying you are being taxed an extra 2 grand, click on the link to appeal it.

I'm bumping this thread, as this dodgy email will no doubt be doing the rounds for a while. People need to be wary.

Good to keep it in the conscious Geoff.

Put another way, NEVER open anything that says 'click this link'. Always search for official web-sites rather than accept 'prompts'.

I get somewhere around 30 - 40 spam e-mails per day. Most of these are directed to the Spam folder from where I can 'block' them but some sneak through. With Hotmail, you can hover the pointer over the title and it gives you the e-mail address. If it's spam or malware, you can see right away by the spurious name and then 'block' it.

I've had similar emails supposedly from hmrc.
Having reported them as probable phishing, hmrc confirmed this.
They never send emails containing ££ amounts & will always address you with your full name, not just sir/madam etc.
Same goes for PayPal, Apple ID scams etc.
Never click on any link supplied. If in doubt, open up a new window & sign into PayPal or whoever the scam is supposedly from to check any erroneous transactions.
