The context of our income and overall equity is very valid as a background to the amount we have spent on Hi-Fi.

My Hi-Fi expenditure is excessive/obsessive to many in that context.

In the context of income and overall equity, the amount I've spent on hifi is very small (less than 2% of the latter). It fades into insignificance (as it should do) compared to the amount spent on, say, our children's education.

Indeed. We don't have any kids, but the amount we've spent on our other hobbies and interests, such as music (live and recorded), holidays and travel, following my football team, eating out at nice restaurants, gardening, food and drink (fine wine) consumed at home, interior design, nice cars, etc, makes what's been spent on hi-fi pale into insignificance!

The problem with a lot of 'hi-fi nerds', for want of a better description [and I've never considered myself as one because hi-fi is only a small part of my life], is that almost their whole existence revolves around hi-fi; they have virtually no other interests (especially if they're male and single), and so the vast majority of their income is spent on buying/selling and swapping boxes of kit.

I remember visiting a guy once, who lived in what could only be described as little more than a hovel, lived on baked beans and almost never went out (bit of a recluse, as 'hi-fi nerds' often are), yet had a £50k hi-fi system!! It takes all sorts, I guess....

Over the past 5 or 6 years, I've spent a full 10% or more on audio equipment. But, I am in an unusual situation to do so. And while that sound like a ton of money, it's only $2k to $2.5k a year. And hopefully by next year I may reach a plateau, once I buy a new preamp I will be close to finished with the expensive parts for a while? Or, who knows when the bug will bite and I'll just start over?

You may think that I am tending towards a Hi-Fi nerd Marco, I have no children, no wife, and never eat out or 'socialise' with the locality., my feeling in a relatively alien environment socially.

I do however have many interests and pursuits, a queue of books to read, two new rack mounts to learn to drive, a stereo Ernest Turner PPM to build, and new Performer software to learn to drive, and a newly built bike to ride.

I am approached by ladies even though I am obviously past my best, but am terrified that their intention is to use the legal system to take at least half of my equity which I have worked hard for.

What I am rally short of is intellectually stimulating people, and this is to me very isolating.
