“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

You can get medication for that Russell.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Oliver Sacks, who also wrote 'The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat' talks about those very things and more in Musicophilia. An amazing book.

There was a doc on the telly the other night about the brain. Bloke dives into the shallow end of the swimming pool and hits his head. Gets treated for severe concussion, goes home and sleeps for three days. Wakes up, has the urge to play the piano, which he has never done before, and discovers he is now a virtuoso pianist. He can't read music, though. Years on he still has the compulsion to play.
    Current Lash Up:

    TEAC VRDS 701T > Sony TAE1000ESD > Krell KSA50S > JM Labs Focal Electra 926.

Goes to show that we create "compartments" in our brain, and that it can (quite literally) get shaken up to expose new ones.

At least you don't have a winder on the side of your head...

I read a book on binaural psycho-acoustics years ago, I can't recall the name, but I seem to recall they installed sensors in an owl's brain, does that ring a bell with anyone? It was compelling reading, and as I recall spoke about how they could make small filter notches in sound and artificially make it seem as if it were coming from a certain direction. They experimented with making binaural recordings for headphone use that seemed to occupy space outside of your head. I'll have to scan the bookshelf and see if I can find it, I wish I could recall the name.
