Default Album Club, March 2017: Van Morrison, Lonnie Donnegan - 'The Skiffle Sessions'

The Album Club choice for March 2017, comes courtesy of Grant (struth) who has stepped in with his suggestion: 'The Skiffle Sessions, Live in Belfast', featuring Van Morrison, Lonnie Donegan and Chris Barber.

As always please listen to the album in its entirety before you comment and/or vote.

As I picked it, albiet in a rush, I will start.. I think its a great album. Stellar performers all, and it shows. Van Is in form and as he started life in skiffle, these 2 were his idols. Not all skiffle though and some nice bles and other stuff there. well recorded for a live album in front of an apreciative Irish crowd. strong 9 from me to kick it off

Glad you liked it Mike. Skiffle is long forgotten now but was immensely popular in the 50's. There were about 50,000 skiffle bands in Britain..
A large number of British musicians began their careers playing skiffle in this period, and some became leading figures in their respective fields. These included leading Northern Irish musician Van Morrison and British blues pioneer Alexis Korner, as well as Ronnie Wood, Alex Harvey and Mick Jagger; folk musicians Martin Carthy, John Renbourn and Ashley Hutchings; rock musicians Roger Daltrey, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Robin Trower and David Gilmour; and popular beat-music successes Graham Nash and Allan Clarke of the Hollies. Most notably, the Beatles developed from John Lennon's skiffle group the Quarrymen. Similarly, the Bee Gees developed from Barry Gibb's skiffle group the Rattlesnakes.

Seen Joe Brown a couple of times over the last 5 years at The Stables Wavendon and Milton Keynes theatre. Both concerts very enjoyable and he is such an accomplished musician.

Great choice of album Grant, not heard it before. A real easy listen and it takes me back. Thanks.
