Remember it well Marco, that and Tower Records (all 3 flooors of it near the Bridge) were my go-to record buying places back in the day....with my wee Planar 2 from Stereo Stereo bought on my student grant!

No-one ever spent their grant on daft things like text books and food.

'Congratulations, you've won a place at University. You're going to need a hi-fi, here's a couple of grand to buy yourself a starter system.'

No wonder they stopped it. That was probably the turning point in the fortunes of the hi-fi industry.
    Current Lash Up:

    TEAC VRDS 701T > Sony TAE1000ESD > Krell KSA50S > JM Labs Focal Electra 926.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Of my weekly allowance for rent, food, books etc., I would usually spend a good proportion of that on records. Happy days!

One of the speaker binding posts on the back of the amp has broken off, maybe in transit, who knows? anyway i decided to strip the amp, give it a clean and investigate the options for replacing the broken part, a couple of things struck me, 1. how well made these amps are, all the knobs and buttons are metal, not painted plastic and 2. how simple it is to work on, modern amps tend to have mostly surface mount components, much easier to manufacture by a robot and makes em much cheaper, but crap if owt goes wrong, this is all through hole meaning the binding post repair will be simple, plus as i'm replacing with better quality than original so it's a small upgrade too

One of the things that impressed me when the first Japanese amplifiers appeared in the UK was the build quality, and the use of solid turned-metal knobs. Quite a change from the plastic 'toothpaste cap' knobs used on British gear. I first saw this on Nikko and Akai integrated amps, and later on Sony and Trio gear.

Have you made sure it actually works? Some of these amps used a module for the power amp which if it needs a new one will render it scrap.... unless you want to pay something like £100 for the module..

i was expecting some of the small knobs to be plastic, it was a pleasant surprise to find everything metal, no wonder the Jap manufacturers were so dominant
