Default Quad II 40s - any good?

On my current amplifier search/quest I've found for sale a used pair of Quad II Forty's, are these mono-blocks any good sound reproduction? I've owned original Quad II's in the past... These would be used to connect to; Promitheus Audio TVC passive pre-amp - Audioplan Kontrast MkII floorstanding speakers with 88db efficiency - Acoustic Signature Challenger/SME V/MM3 - Kinshaw Perception MM/MC phono-stage.

Any advice - knowledge - experience greatly appreciated as usual!

Not really, they are a more 'modern' sound and more powerful.

At the right price, a very good choice with great backup if needed.

Do these amps work well with ESL63s ?
I gather 63s need more welly than a 57. I tried the 63s with a PrimaLuna valve amp. On music it worked with, it sounded very good, but it couldn't hack choral music, even small choirs.

All Quad amps work into ESL speakers, that's what they were made for.

I might be wrong, but I think I remember that Quad did not recommend the 306 for the ESL63. However, in 1988 I went to buy second hand ESL63's, they were being driven by a 306, and it seemed to work fine.

When I got the 63's home they seemed to work fine for me on Quad II's and a 303.

Back in the day we used to sell the 306 to go with ESLs. It would be daft of Quad to make amps which didn't work with their speakers of that time.

I'm currently using a 40 Watt-ish valve power amp into 87db loudspeakers and I don't have any problems. Sounds sublime on vinyl.
