I'm nigel.
get yourself a SMSL SANSKRIT from amazon.
very very good at the now discounted price of 70 quid.
it features coax optical and plug and play usb inputs.....I tried the coax input connected to my roksan cd player and it took a critical A/B comparison to notice much change in the sound.
the native cd player was better....but not by THAT much.
if you feel tweaky there is a proper regulated 9v supply available to upgrade the wallwart supply too.
NIGE
Ive got the m6minidac that is also a headphone amp from smsl. Its very good. The sanscrit is about £85 currently on my amazon, but dont seem to be getting sold by amazon. Maybe they were clearing stock as there is a 2017 7th version just out. Make very tuneful dacs for money. The smpsu is quite good but a linear does improve things somewhat..

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".
“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

I have a friends maverick dac and they are pretty good and cheap! Even has tube output.
The Muse DACs are great and quite cheap, I liked the NOS one a lot,see eBay or AliExpress
novafidelity x40 music server/pre/dac, Arcam A39, roksan k3 power amp,Monitor Audio Monitor 50, Dali spektor 1, van damme interconnects and speaker cable, roskan k3 CD player
If you can find a VALAB DAC buy it. Mine cost me £95 used and still feels like I got a huge bargain.

I'm Simon.
I've got a beresford bushmaster mk2 with upgraded chip. Now surplus to requirements. My first DAC and a considerable upgrade from the inbuilt dac in a Quad 99 CDP. If you're in the U.K. £80 delivered. Spdif inpu (amongst others), also has headphone output.

Thank you all for your suggestions and time. I have been scratching my head over the sanskrit and a newer topping d30 but ended up buying Simon's bushmaster which has many positive reviews.
