I am tempted to try one on the cd player. Thing is I am not one of these who is happy if it sounds better. I will still want to know why.

Having heard the difference a decent mains cable from MCRU made to my system, once I have finished upgrading the power leads, I may try an internal fuse or three to see if they do make a difference to my ears.

What if there is no satisfactory explanation available?

Would you still trust your ears, telling you there is a difference (hopefully an improvement), and leave it there and enjoy the upgrade, and its effect on your favourite music, or drive yourself demented trying to explain the (perhaps currently) unexplainable?

Not everything experienced in life can be neatly pigeonholed into little boxes of 'indisputable proof', designed to make you feel better about yourself!

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

And here we have in a nutshell the problem with being an arch subjectivist.

It has nothing to do with 'feeling better about myself'. It has everything to do with wanting to understand how audio replay works so that knowledge can be put to practical effect, not just in creating better audio systems but in creating cheaper audio systems.

If the fuse makes a difference/improvement beyond the placebo level then there certainly will be a satisfactory technical explanation for it. Antony TD already has his suspicions and has asked for some easily-provided information to take that further.

Sorry, but I am not one of those people who is happy to sit back and accept that it is 'magic' or that it doesn't matter as long as 'Wish You Were Here' sounds good to me.

If that attitude was common to everyone we would still be living in the Dark Ages and sacrificing chickens to the rain god.

Not entirely convinced by that particular aphorism, James.

Really? I've certainly measured plenty of changes without being able to hear them.
