As an engineer from way back i can say ive seen plenty bits of equipment go on fire, although more tvs than anything else. They can go up pretty damn quick too. Had a few things sent in in cardboard boxes too lol. Such things are less likely now of course but do happen.

The French distributor of these fuses actually recommends fitting the next size up as far as ratings go. This seems a bit daft to me.

Bad advice I'd say...
Before buying my second fuse I asked Densen (maker of my Pre) about this specific thing having read those few posts on that thread.
They did say that there wouldn't be any risk of inrush current (which they suggested that as a possibility of fuses blowing) as that is regulated as part of the design and anyway, it's a slow blow fuse so can take more current momentarily.

Fast blow fuses maybe more of a risk, i dunno.
Mass produced fuse may or may not have lesser QC than a more expensive bespoke one?
Would probably have more confidence in one that didn't cost 10p/1000 tbh.

I noticed a few people on the Audiogon thread had them blow whilst they were 'burning them in'. Which would imply they are not as robust as the fuse they replaced.

If I paid £90 for a fuse and it went pop whilst burned by in, I would be a tad annoyed when my bog standard fuse has be n fine.

A little story for you.

A few years back, I was reviewing a turntable – I set it running in my upstairs listening room to warm up and went downstairs to write the review introduction. About 20 minutes later, the power went off and I found that the RCD for the house sockets that included my listening room had tripped.

I reset it and went upstairs, assuming the review turntable had failed but it was fine and running happily still. However, through the thick fog of smoke in the room I noticed that the power LED on the phono stage I was using at the time was out. I went to remove it from the rack, burning my hand on the lid in the process, which was red hot, and took it downstairs to cool off!

To cut a long story short, one of the rectifier diodes had gone short circuit, overloading the transformer. There was no fusing on the transformer’s outputs so it just sat there cooking itself until its moulded enclosure melted and the windings made contact with the earthed case, tripping the breaker. Had a fuse been fitted on the output side, however, it would have blown.

Even ignoring the potential fire hazard due to the lack of fusing, instead of a repair bill of about £4 for 4 diodes and one fuse, it actually cost me around £50 to fix - 4 diodes, two nearby melted capacitors and one transformer, plus two fuses and fuseholders that I added to the transformer outputs to prevent such future events. Funnily enough, this left the sound completely unaffected!

Worst of all, my flippin’ listening room stank for weeks as well...

It'd depend on how the supplier in question handled the matter. Fuses (and indeed valves) can go at any time. As long as any faulty fuse was replaced F.O.C, during the trial period, I'd be fine with it. If not, and after paying for it in advance, I was left with a faulty fuse, I wouldn't.
