Even old 78's on a good mono acoustic record player 'image'. Surprisingly well actually. Assuming one's idea of imaging is the interpretation of ambient depth and positioning.

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

No. Imaging is due to our brains interpreting fine spatial details, it's not a trick recording technique. As per a previous post, old mono recordings do it and to my mind do it more realistically than stereo.

Well no... We surely all have experienced that "created illusion" like one tom drum coming from the far left and the other one from the far right...

Proper live recordings really do not need digital post processing. Just solid sound engineering
Take for example older direct to tape club recordings or orchestral recordings made with the Decca tree arrangement.

About the original question, yes vinyl can have super detailed and 3d imaging, but it is not cheap and requires heavy optimisation in setup and matching of all components. It's not plug and play or mix and match.

Then it's all in your heads. My interpretation of imaging is best heard through single driver speakers.

Bold statement from someone who advocates sacrificing frequency extremes (along with ambience) and complex transient response for mid clarity.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Mono can only have one dimension of space (front to back) stereo can have front back and left / right.

Stereo is sort of an illusion (albeit one based on reality) but it doesn't need digital to recreate it just a stereo mic technique and 2 recording channels.

Alan Blumlein is, in large part, the man we have to thank for stereo (and a bunch of other stuff), well worth reading up on his achievements.
