Back in the early 80's, one of our customers made himself a pair in cardboard, glued to an 'Alice band'. He brought them along to every demo and made some for our customers.
I,d refuse to wear em on the grounds of lookin like a dick

These could come in handy. For those, who have HF hearing loss.

Your objection is handled here:
I’m afraid that they may
make me look silly”
If you’re worried about how you will look when you wear them, just use Earglasses® at home to listen to music or watch TV. But you may be pleasantly surprised at how people react when they see you wearing them at the movies, in church, or at a play or a concert, anywhere you want to hear better. Our braver users conisitenly report that strangers are just as likely to ask where to get their own Earglasses® lenses as to comment on their distinctive appearance

I suspect that for some people with marginal or temporary hearing loss that these may be useful. I have noted myself the effect of cupping my hand(s) behind my ears. Often it's the environment which is the problem though - noisy environments, such as restaurants, and in some venues there's a very strong suspicion that the owners will deliberately make acoustic conditions unfavourable, either by removing sound absorbing material so that other ambient noise (e.g from other diners) becomes much louder, or by gradually turning up the background "music" to levels which make any form of conversation impossible. Apparently, in restaurants this increases turnover, and there may be more sittings in the same time period, thus pushing up profits.
I know of restaurants where there used to be a quiet enough ambience, and then they "modernised" - very probably for the reasons mentioned, and now they are only fit for a quick hit and run before a concert or play.
Regarding hearing loss - it can sometimes be temporary, as I very recently noticed - much to my surprise. I didn't think it would recover, but as far as I can tell, it now has, following a cold.
I think that rushing to buy hearing aids may simply create other problems, though obviously some people do have hearing problems and presumably hearing aids do help them.
Re looking like a d**k - some people may not care, some may say they do already etc.
Should we offer a prize to the first person who sees anyone wearing these in the UK?
Dave
Why not go the whole hog?
Use a stereo mike with a portable stereo amp and a pair of headphones.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!
