    Default Voice coil transplant?

I've blown a pair of Goodmans Magister 15 inch bass drivers. I have similar 12 inch drivers and was wondering whether a voice coil and spider transplant might be possible. I realise that this knowledge is a little 'specialist' because of needing to know the magnet gap size etc. Obviously the drivers are now damaged so I can a go a certain way in dismantling them to find out sizes etc. I also have a Goodmans Magnum 12 inch broken driver I can compare sizes with. The other possibility would be another 15 inch driver, hit and miss I realise. Any advice or input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Reads like a DIY Dr C Barnard adventure experiment.
Other possibility is to take a look at Eminence Bass drivers.. *many* serious builders utilise their 15'" woofers.
    They can't all be wrong?

Also depends on why you might want to do this. If it's for fun, to see if you can do it, then go,ahead. If you really want the drivers to go in some other project, then I recall the Wembley Loudspeaker co can probably do this.

Thanks for the replies. I won't lose anything by having a little look first. I will remove the cones and voice coil and see how the voice coil compares to the 12 inch version I have. I'll keep you informed. It may make for an interesting DIY story.

One thing the Wembley people mentioned to me years ago is that sometimes they even rewind a voice coil, or maybe even make a new one.
I don't think you're planning that, but it's something which can be done - seemingly.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Well.....The cones were jammed, so I assumed the voice coils had fried and stuck in the magnets. But, having cut a cone away and removed the spider and voice coil, I was surprised to see the wiring in remarkably good condition. I checked for continuity and the wire is indeed intact. But the aluminium is scraping on the magnet. Feeling inside the voice coil there is a small lip, produced, I think, by the voice coil bottoming out against the back of the magnet. I think (hope) this may have jammed the cone. I am going to sand off the lip and re-centre the voice coil. I will then re-attach the cone and hear what happens. Fingers crossed.

Success! Speaker number one working again. This is what I did. Took off the dust cap by applying heat with a hair dryer. Cut the cone as close to the voice coil as possible. Luckily the vinyl edge peels off the rim of the basket easily on these Goodmans drivers, they have no separate foam surround like other speakers.. Cone off. Carefully removed the spider with voice coil. Sanded down the problem lip inside the aluminium tube. Re-centred the voice coil and glued down the spider.Glued back the cone where it had been cut. Stuck back down the edge. Put driver back in speaker. It worked. I'm just hoping I don't get an annoying buzz or something at certain frequencies but so far so good. You can only try these things when you have nothing to lose but so far I am very pleased. Speaker number two now.
