    You need the glue too,if you go down that route. In my Ag sphere , we use O rings in all sorts of things. Power washers ,hydraulic fittings etc
    I agree about the Vernier to measure the width of the original ring . It may just be you could try a slightly thicker ring , if there is a slack fit already , or use some sort of sealant when assembling (but not the sort that dries like glue !!!)
