apparently the set up goes from a basic 5.1.2. 5 being front left, right, centre and surround left and right.. one being the subwoofer.. and two being the ceiling mounted, or 2 "upward firing" speakers.
depending on the size of your room/theatre it can go upto 64 speakers.
but i think basically the third number is the amount of extra speakers for ambient sounds. so a 7.2.4 would be front L and R, centre, 2 surround and 2 surround back speakers, 2 subwoofers and 4 "atmos enabled" ceiling mounted and/or upward firing speakers....confused???? i am..lol.
that being said..
i watched transformers age of extinction on blu ray in dolby atmos on a standard 5.1 dolby digital A/V receiver and it looked and sounded foookin awesome.
hopr this helps
cheers
Mike.
Personally I don't think I will play around with Atmos much. DTS-X, from what I have read, is a much better algorithm.
I will be interested to see how it processes non-DTX-S soundtracks as there won't be much available for a while.
