    Default Cheap Projects!

To help a friend of a friend who is having a clear out I am listing two projects that someone may be interested in.

To comply with forum rules I have added the sale prices. Here we go:

    KEF Reference Series 104 speakers - £100
    SONY Amplifier/Receiver Model STR-7055A - £35

The owner sent me an email describing the KEF Reference Series 104 speakers and SONY Amplifier/Receiver Model STR-7055A both of 1976 vintage which are up for grabs. This is what was in the email:

"I have inherited these from the wife of a deceased friend of mine, and although I do not think they are worth much, wonder if you think somebody may be interested in them. I do not want to be bothered with shipping them, but they could be picked up, or I could deliver them within a reasonable distance.

    1) Pair of KEF Reference Series 104 speakers: (1976 vintage, including boxes and manuals) and (unbranded) metal floor stands:

These were sat in a conservatory for about 20 years, hardly used, and sun baked on one side nearly white (from walnut). I have sanded and re-varnished them and they are now a cross between mahogany and walnut but at least now look the same all round, (the slightly faded black backs I have not touched).

The foam grilles had disintegrated to dust, so I have made new grilles with a wooden frame and brown speaker cloth, which makes them look quite smart now. (The original KEF badges have not been fitted, they are available but in poor condition).

The tweeters were badly damaged and I have changed them both for new Vifa units from Wilmslow Audio, (twisted & taped connections not soldered). However, one is still not working, it looks like the crossover is not functioning. It may be possible to get replacements, but I have not gone into that.

The main drivers and bass radiators work fine in both, but the domed centre dust covers are a little damaged, although this does not seem to affect the sound.

The stands are in fairly good condition, they were originally bought by myself in May 1976, for £15.90!

The speakers work and sound quite good, considering the absence of one tweeter, fairly bass heavy though.

    2) SONY Amplifier/Receiver Model STR-7055A: (1976 vintage, including box and manual):

This is in walnut and in reasonable condition, apart from the 2 fuse bulb pilot lamps for the display both blown. I bought 2 on E-Bay but they only lasted very dim for about 30 seconds each so I gave up with the idea of replacing them.

The amplifier and receiver work very well, only occasionally one channel goes off on FM but comes back when re-tuned or the input mode switch is changed and turned back. The built in AM aerial does not seem to work at all, but I have not tried a cable type aerial."

    Here are some piccies:

The seller is Spencer Ashcroft who lives in Preston.

If you are interested, please PM me and I will give you Spencer's contact details.

    Regards

    Steve
