The TD-1541 chip is the only thing I ever buy an old CD player for. Some of them still run fine, but can be picky with certain types of discs. The microprocessors won't last forever, and will be hard or impossible to replace when the time comes. Most of them can be bypassed if you want a CD player with no display or controls. It's easier to just scavenge the chips and use them to build a standalone DAC in my opinion.

I've a few broken players that use the TD1541. Knocking up a DAC from them just to pass a rainy afternoon is beyond me though.
