Default Looking for bigger TV recs

    Hi folks,

We currently have a Panasonic th42px80b (plasma 42") TV, which we've had now for an alarming 8 years! I would have guessed 6, but, there you go; time flies.

Anyway, its starting to look small, if you know what I mean, and we'd like to upgrade to a bigger one. I reckon at least a 50", maybe even 55".

Thing is, I know very little about current models and display types. My cousin has a massive plasma screen and a gigantic dvd collection and he says he's not impressed with current LED screens and prefers plasmas, but that's the only opinion I've been given on the matter.

I do like my panny screen very much and if I could just get the same, but bigger, I would, but these days its 4K this, smart tv that....

I guess the important bit is what I'm gonna feed it. Well, no dvds, no blu ray, no 4K source (that I know of), just a sky box with the FTA HD channels and the occasional HD download.

    Thoughts?

We have a 5 year old, 50" LG plasma upstairs that cost £600 or £700 when new and was highly regarded at the time (some said It was better than equivalent Panny plasmas) . We just bought a cheap Blaupunkt 49/235z LED tv for occasional use downstairs and If this tv Is anything to go by, then It seems LCD has improved quite a bit over the years. Motion blur Is hardly noticeable and picture quality Is pretty good. The sound Is terrible but I bought a cheap sound bar.

I still think the plasma is better but It does make me wonder how a better quality LED tv would compare.

They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

I have a Samsung 50" curved led smart tv, the picture quality is very good. The only issue is that being curved it sometimes picks up light reflections quite badly. Over all well worth a look.[IMG][/IMG]

LCDs have improved a lot in the last decade. The new ones are as good as the old plasmas now I reckon.

I should have said OLED as that was what I really meant by "LED". Agreed the LED backlight LCD screens are much better than the old fluorescent backlit devices, but IMO the OLED displays are whole step better (and sadly more expensive!)

I had a 37 inch Panasonic plasma TV for over 5 years . It has now been replaced by a 48 inch Sony LCD TV which is a big upgrade in picture quality IMO .
