Default Definitive Vinyl version of Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

I have several copies of the original UK release of this classic Fleetwood Mac album, Rumours.

These were acquired over several years during my search for a decent copy, with little wear or background noise.
I eventually found a good original and compared with a much more recent remastered version, it is way better in my opinion.

There is good modern vinyl around, but my experience of remastered classics of the 70's is that the originals are more dynamic and transparent, too much filtering and clipping has left the recent releases lacking any guts. YMMV.

I had a Birthday today and my other half got me a nice Prezzy, which after hearing it this morning, I think is the ultimate vinyl version of this album. Details:

Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, 2011 USA Release.
    Reprise Records # 517787-1
45 RPM Double Album in Gatefold Sleeve.
    Limited Edition, Remastered.

It just sounds so right, very dynamic and clean sounding. Just the original tracks spread across two discs running at 45 RPM.

This is not to be confused with the later double album which ran at 33 RPM and consisted of the album on the first disc and additional/Live tracks and out takes on the second disc. Or the various other German or Japanese audiophile releases. There are many versions around but if its great sounding new vinyl you want, look no further as this item is still available. Analogue Seduction have it for sale on their site, but my other half ordered it from my local record shop at a better price, even though the shop had to source it from the States and import it for her.

    My rating: *****

Apparently there are 2 versions of this and the one you want has... The Warner Brothers American issue says "Made in U.S.A." on the back corner under the barcode (even though the LP was pressed in Germany). And the front plastic shrink wrap says "Pressed at Pallas" on a gold colored sticker.

There is another doing rounds that is from Europe, apparently pressed at GZS in the Czech Republic.

The vinyl is impeccably pressed but you can be sure it was not cut from the master tape and according to a reader it doesn't sound very "analog-y"

Those 45rpm issues are about the best out there Ken, very nice indeed! Found an original copy on a market recently in good nick and it does sound better than some of the later reissues.

Are you using a Denon 301 mk2 now Ken, what do you think?

Mine is the "Made in USA" though you are right about the sticker saying pressed at Pallas, it actually states Reprise Records first on the sleeve, which is a division of Warner. The listing on "Rate Your Music" states Reprise USA 2011 against the catalogue number.

I can only comment on this USA release and say it is everything I would want, they did a great job with it. It's also the first new vinyl I've purchased for some time, that is free from clicks and pops. My purchases by London Grammar, Gregory Porter, and Adele all have several clicks.

I will bring the album to the MiBO bake off.

Jimbo - I've had the 301 MkII for a few years now, but it spent most of that time in a drawer.

Since purchasing the ProJect Phono Box RS a couple of months back, I have pressed the Denon back into service.

I like this cartridge a lot, it has a nice warm tone (but not overly so) that goes well with acoustic instruments, the top end is clean so it makes a good job of Rock guitars as well. At it's price point there is not much around that I would consider in its place and those choices would be tonally different rather than better (2m Black for instance, which is actually more expensive), so its down to gelling with your kit and personal taste, it works for me. Also, as you are aware, it handles older vinyl well, not highlighting every defect, which suits my mainly pre owned record collection.

I have so much on at the moment, project wise, I have a mod I want to do to the Arm on my TT. It will be well into next year before I can touch it, even though I have drawn up the mod and have some of the materials needed.

Hi Ken, yes I noticed how kind the Denon 301 was on older vinyl and nice and smooth sounding generally but as you say enough detail at the top end. I would say the 2M Black is at the other end of the spectrum but a wonderful insightful cartridge with balls, detail and great soundstage. Mine gives recordings a live sound where as the Denon has a more liquid laid back sound.

Be good to see you down at WiBO. I am bringing the Lenco with Shure M55e with JICO SAS stylus. I would say this sounds somewhere I between the Denon and 2M Black!

I think you are spot on re the Denon/2M Black James, that's how they come across to me, when I've heard them using familiar tracks.
    Both cracking cartridges.
Looking forward to the 5th and seeing everyone.
