Default Devialet (+ News & Reviews) - At Musicraft (Derby)

Musicraft is pleased to announce that we support Devialet

    Devialet Expert

Devialet is a French company created in 2007 from the encounter of 3 complementary and explosive expertise: Pierre-Emmanuel Calmel, an engineer, Quentin Sannié, a visionary entrepreneur and Emmanuel Nardin, a designer of excellency.

Together they founded Devialet, Ingénierie Acoustique de France

Devialet’s origin: an invention that revolutionized sound processing.

Pierre-Emmanuel Calmel invented a revolutionary technology that transformed sound amplification: The ADH Intelligence. The first hybrid technology that associates the preciseness of Analogue amplification (Class A) to the power of Digital amplification (Class D) allowing Devialet products to reach a never heard before sound quality.

    Why Devialet?

The name Devialet refers to Sieur de Vialet, engineer and companion of Diderot, who participated in writing some articles for the « Encyclopédie Française ».

The philosophy of Enlightenment is indeed at the heart of our profound inspirations for the Brand: the technological progress makes the Man better. With emotion, essential component of Devialet’s listening experience.

Devialet ADH® - The best of both worlds

    Devialet Expert

Invented by Devialet, ADH Intelligence is the first hybrid amplification technology that combines the refinement of analogue amplification (Class A) with the power and compactness of digital amplification (Class D).

Both types of amplification operate in parallel, for radically increased performance.

    Devialet ADH®

The ADH is a new hybrid amplification topology offering a modern and elegant synthesis that addresses the many constraints linked to audio amplification. It is the result of work aimed at, for example, improving the low energy efficiency performance levels of analogue amplifiers, still massively adopted in the "high-end audio" industry, but long since abandoned in the professional audio, car audio and portable audio player sectors.

The exceptional audio performance of analogue amplifiers is obtained at the cost of a level of energy dissipation that is unreasonable in the 21st century. The idea of the ADH is to maintain the analogue amplifier's voltage generating function (to maintain their excellent audio performance levels), but to confide the current generation function, and accordingly, that of generating power for the load, to an amplifier equipped with drastically superior energy efficiency, in this case a digital amplifier, otherwise known as a switch amplifier.

Thanks to this hybrid nature, the analogue amplifier determines the load's output voltage, just as it would in any audio system, without, however, providing the associated current. It therefore maintains the same performance levels for both no-load and on load operations, which is a unique feature.

    Devialet ADH®

In the analogue amplifier, no passive component is present on the audio signal path. The active components crossed by the audio signal have no ability whatsoever to store load. Moreover, the analogue amplifier operates based on constant power dissipation. It is therefore insensitive to the evolution of the musical message, both to its present and to its past. There is no heat-up time and thermal distortion is de facto non-existent.

The analogue amplifier is ultra fast: its natural pass band extends continuously up to 5 MHz, ensuring perfect reproduction of transients and the absence of phase difference in the audio band. The actual pass band is then that of the audio content during playback: 22,050 kHz for a file sampled at 44.100 kHz, 48,000 kHz for a file sampled at 96,000 kHz, etc.

The analogue amplifier's dynamic range is much extended. In fact, it is capable of delivering voltage levels of up to 120V while maintaining an extremely low, essentially inaudible, residual background noise. No hiss in the speakers, regardless of sound level.

The digital amplifier rests on an innovative, multi-phase and multi-level design operating at 1.6 MHz. 4 phases over 5 levels are in play per channel. 8 phases and 25 levels in bridged mode. Microprocessor-driven power transmission is obtained with no latency and at its most accurate value. The digital amplifier is devoid of an output condenser. Its effective energy efficiency reaches 90% and the power density achieved is very high. From then on, it enables the delivery of particularly powerful amplification stages in a limited footprint.

There are a great many advantages to hybridisation. The output impedance is constant and less than a milliohm for the entire audio band. The resulting damping factor ensures perfect control of any speaker on the market. Exceptional audio performance levels are obtained, without special selection or peering of components. The performance levels are reproducible from one device to another, sustainable, and guaranteed by design.

In addition, microprocessor control of each amplification channel ensures their constant self-calibration, as well as exhaustive protection against all of the following potential hazards: overvoltages, overloads, power pulses, thermal events.

The Devialet switching mode power supply

    Devialet Expert

All the power of current, with complete transparency

    Devialet switching mode power supply

Over the years, the position occupied by digital/analogue conversion has evolved considerably. In the era of "computer audio", it is now a central issue, given that it is decisive in terms of the ultimate performance of an audio system.

In the strict sense of the term, high fidelity consists of respecting the work of the artists and technical teams involved in producing a recording. Insofar as distortion and technical imperfections can easily be likened to "artistic" elements during the recording process, they certainly have no place whatsoever in the sound reproduction phase.

Upstream from the digital/analogue conversion, with bit-perfect processing of the audio samples, it is possible to be 100% faithful to the work of the artists. Downstream from the digital/analogue conversion, the signal will inevitably be modified, to a lesser or greater degree depending on the systems, but never 100% accurate. The digital/analogue conversion must occur at the latest possible point in an audio system.

By pushing back its placement as close as possible to the speakers, directly at the heart of each ADH amplification section, the signal's analogue path is reduced to the strict minimum: here, 5 cm between the origin of the signal in its analogue form and its powered amplification, versus, at times, several meters and links in conventional systems.

Given that it is localised in the amplification section, the digital/analogue conversion operates symbiotically with it. The ‘Magic Wire’ architecture brings out the best from the top convertors on the market: those with current output. The Expert amplifiers current use series 179x Texas Instruments convertors, but our architecture is generic; other reference products have been successfully tested.

In a conventional chain, the same links are systematically cascaded: current output convertor, current/voltage conversion (transconductance) to an operational amplifier, a pre-amplification stage and then an amplification stage. Each inevitably degrades the quality of the original signal. In contrast, all these steps are merged within the ‘Magic Wire’: transconductance, the spectrum anti-folding filter and all of the system gain form a single unit.

The ‘Magic Wire’ operates in feed forward mode, with no capacity to store load. It operates at constant power, self-calibrates and compensates for the dispersion of the convertors. In the end, the performance levels obtained exceed the manufacturer's specifications.

The result is magical — the straight wire with gain — the Magic Wire.

    Devialet DAC

DAC Magic Wire The world's shortest signal path

    Devialet DAC

The invention of "Magic Wire" technology enables Devialet to ensure the world's shortest path between the DAC and speaker connections: 5 cm.

To achieve this technological feat, Devialet refined the best digital-analogue convertor in existence for a complete absence of noise and distortion.
