Tonights Update - The Reference Lenco Pt XXXXVII - It's all a bit Dave Clarke 5, or the Lenco is in pieces again .

It's been a while since I last wrote so I thought I'd better update the thread. I've heard back from J7 and the Alphason tonearm is now getting looked over. The bearing appears to be in perfect nick, lets hope the rest of the tonearm is in the same state. I have a sense of urgency now because the tonearm will be here in a few days. I have been experimenting with the motor whilst the deck has been stripped and I think I've noticed a few areas where things can be improved with regards vibration isolation. I'm also in the planning stages of decoupling the motor but this is something that I will be leaving for now as I want to hear the sonic changes to the deck.

It's all a bit Dave Clark!

    DSCN2994.jpg

The motor is now covered in Dynamat. The Dynamat was sitting at the bottom of the spare cables just gathering dust. I managed to use up all the spare Dynamat that I had and I've done a pretty good job covering the whole of the motor with special attention being paid to the motor cage and spindle head.

    DSCN2996.jpg

I found some rubber washers which I'm going to use on the bearing's spindle between the bearing locking brace. The idea is to try and trap isolation from the bearing getting back into the plinth or to minimise.

    DSCN2997.jpg

Now this next picture is interesting. It shows a gap between the motor springs and the top plate. I'm looking for a suitable thickness rubber washer to stuff in here to try and dampen vibration even further.

    DSCN2999.jpg

A quick picture showing how crowded it is under the hood. Decoupling the motor is very easy but the tricky bit is deciding which method to use.

    DSCN3001.jpg

Tomorrow night will be spent looking at the motor and seeing what can be done to dampen the vibrations in the motor.

Enough for tonight. As ever, stay tuned......

Back on the trail again Andy . This looks like good work once again . I remember mucking around with the GL75 and I took the suspension springs out not realizing that the motor was touching the wooden body of the turntable . Flippin eck , that little motor can vibrate . I was taken aback how much TBH . So any work in that area seems to be a very good idea in my opinion .
I have little ball bearings which fit into the adjuster at the end of the motor spindle ( supposedly an upgrade ) if you're interested in one or two of them to try .
    Fantastic pictures once again BTW
    Regards
    Brian

Minor update. Just ordered x3 sets of isolation spikes from Hong Kong. Should be fun and will enable me to add greater isolation to the deck and the isolation board that I use with the '75. I also additionally had no way of levelling the deck that's a problem now solved.

Tonights Update - The Reference Lenco Pt XXXXVIII - Call the AA, tyre pressure down or more tyre Kick'in.

Just waiting for several components to arrive from various venerable people in the audiophile world. I've managed to dig out a fresh set of motor springs and as a consequence will try mounting the motor on both sets that I own and seeing which reduces motor vibration the best. I've still not assessed the motor anatomy properly but I think I've recognised a couple of areas that could be improved. I'm hoping that the ability to properly level the deck and further attention to detail with respect to motor vibration will hopefully improve the sonic performance of the deck. I had a little scare earlier this week when the speed controller decided to blow it's fuses. A couple of new 2A 250V jobbies got the old girl back up and running. I think we are entering our 6th week without the Alphason. I'm missing the old beast and cant wait to spin a little vinyl.

Today's update - The Refence Lenco Pt XXXXIX - The lull before the storm, or shit I need to get organised!

BIG news today. The Alphason tonearm should be coming back in a day or so. It's been fully fettled, rewired with IKEDA silver, new silver cartridge tags and has had a tonearm earth added which it was previously missing. The tonearm queing mechanism is now fixed and the bearings recieved a clean bill of health. I've had my Tyr tonearm cable modified from right angled to straight 5 din adapter which means it will fit better in the new tonearm mount and benefit from extra vibration protection from the top plate . I've done a little more work on the Lenco.

We now have two tiers of vibration control and isolation. I've removed the old feet from the Lenco and applied 4 new heavy weight spikes from Japan, they are excellently produced and cost £18 for a set of 4, a bargain. I think I'm in for a bit of a treat with these as they have markedly improved the peformance of the bog standard chopping block that I've been using. The next update was to the old bamboo chopping block. I have mounted an additional 4 spiked feet onto the chopping board which enables me to further protect the deck from ground bourne vibration. All the additional spiked feet allow the deck and isolation boards to be fully levelled which should improve tonearm function. I have a big update planned for Part XXXXX of this thread.

    As ever stay tuned.......
